Oberleutnant Wilhelm Baumgartner +(geffallen) KRETA
Good morning to all.
I am looking for details of a certain Oberleutnant Wilhelm Bauer, a fighter pilot (probably from JG 27 or another unit that flew over Kreta). He died apparently on Hospital. BAUER, Wilhelm. (DOB: 08.05.12). 27.05.41 Oblt., KIA Crete. He seems to have been born on 08th May 1912. Any new details of career, causes of death or unit, most welcomed. Yours, Adriano |

Re: Oberleutnant Wilhelm Baumgartner +(geffallen) KRETA
I guess I made a mistake as this Oblt. Wilhalm Bauer was the commanding officer from 2. Kompanie Gebirgsjägerregiment 100...
Anyway..how a LW officer could be in charge of a Gebirgsjäger Regiment ?? Adriano |

Re: Oberleutnant Wilhelm Baumgartner +(geffallen) KRETA
Adriano,
One of the unique characteristics of the Luftwaffe (as opposed to independent air forces of other nations), was the possession of an organic paratrooper force; the Fallschirmjäger. These were established in 1938. So, I guess the answer to your, query, and the reason that you apparently found BAUER, Wilhelm. (DOB: 08.05.12). 27.05.41 Oblt., KIA Crete. in the Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries here http://ww2.dk/lwoffz.html , is that Gebirgsjäger officers were nominally the Luftwaffe officers. Regards, Sinisa |

Re: Oberleutnant Wilhelm Baumgartner +(geffallen) KRETA
Byron,
Thank you. I messed up the tittle with the name of BAUER. I was indeed digging out some BAUER airmen to check and managed to find the right man I was looking for. I found this name of OBLT Wilhelm Bauer on the LW officers list from DE ZENG (A-Z) which is a comprehensive work. This is why I found weird for a LW airman being in command of 2./Kp/GJR 100!!! But....this is how it was. |
