Losses 28 June 1944

Hello,
I look for two other losses, no doubt, no injuries, no fatalities other than the three other known losses.
On 28 June 1944 JG 11 and JG 1. Combat around 20:30. Donfront/Mayenne.

Uffz Jäger Hans (KIA)
Ofw Jochim Berthold (WND)

According to the Luftwaffe losses summary database of Mr Brekkens, JG 1 and JG 11 lost four aircraft destroyed/missing and one damage on 28 June 1944.

II./J.G.1 1 aircraft missing due to enemy action
I./J.G.11 1 aircraft missing due to enemy action, 1 aircraft damaged by gunfire from enemy aircraft during operational flight, not observed by enemy
II./J.G.11 1 aircraft destroyed by gunfire from enemy aircraft during operational flight, observed by enemy
III./J.G.11 1 aircraft destroyed on the ground by enemy gunfire from ground forces

According to the book "La luftwaffe face au débarquement allié", II./JG 11 fought P-38s in the morning near the French-Belgian border.

And III./JG 11 was on the Eastern Front.

So that leaves only two aircraft lost and one damaged, flown by the pilots you listed. I understand you have all details on these, but please ask if they are needed.

So here is my reply:

As I wrote before, the only known battle for II./JG 11 was near the Belgian border, away from your area. All known losses and claims for II./JG 11 during the area were in northern France, not in western France where JG 1 and I./JG 11 were active. And II./JG 11 was flying Bf 109, while British pilots in the evening of 28 June reported meeting Fw 190s.

The most probable explanation of the "missing Fw 190 losses" is an overclaim of the British pilots. 4 claims against two real losses and one damaged is not so bad. Probably several British pilots attacked the same German fighter.

I would say the British claims were excellent.

If we compare the claims in 1944 with the often very wild and inaccurate ones back in 1941-42 it was a great transformance.

I would say it speaks millions with regard to the decision the British took to learn their pilots to shoot which was in 1943 if I remember correctly. It turned the bad ones into acceptable ones and the acceptables into good ones.
One of the best decisions taken in my mind by the British.

On June 28, 1944, around 9:40 p.m., he was shot down in aerial combat between Ferns and Domfront with Spitfire and crashes to the return of the fight with his Fw 190A-8 '11 + yellow "WNr. 340026 Vilaines to the Juhel.

JOCHIM Berthold OFW. Driver 1./JG I./JG 11 of 11.
June 28, he shot at 20:40 to a Spitfire (BT - CT) Domfront-Mayenne but his Fw 190A-8 WNr. 680 578 is touched in turn and slightly wounded he managed to reach the base. He was repatriated to Germany for some time.

KAATZ Aloysius OFHR. Driver 5./JG 1 of 1 II./JG "Oesau"
On 28 June, he was shot down in aerial combat against Spitfires southwest of Flers around 21:30 and worn disappeared with his Fw 190A-8 "black 7" WNr. 680,523.

Thank you for your answers. What bothers me in the fighting of June 28 have claimed victories in the battle report, I have the same answer as Stig, I think trust the pilot story for when those claims are validated by their teammates flight .
Flight Lieutenant Irving Farmer "Hap" Kennedy. Squadron No. 401 (R.C.A.F). Barley Blue I was 3 and I was flying east to the position shown above and to the altitude we were assaulted by about 6 Fw 190 out of nowhere. 4 Blue and myself, it was repositioned aircraft combat ready enemies and then the enemy planes headed southeast. We pursued them and I overtook a Fw 190 25 miles east of Domfront. I fired once quickly to 300 yards from the Fw 190 and the shot hit him, he hit the trees and exploded. I declare that I destroyed a Fw 190. I was flying on Blue 4 and was with Blue 3 when it surpassed the Fw 190. I saw him open fire and I saw the plane crashing into trees and explode. F/LT Squadron (R.C.A.F). M.R Bowskell.
The Flight Lieutenant William Richard Tew. 10 miles east of Domfront. I was flying on Blue 3 during an "armed reconnaissance". Our Blue section was attacked unexpectedly from 6 hours and dispersed. The Red section is scattered forward and saw two Fw 190 flying haphazardly in the back. They went back strongly after attacking the Blue section. I gained altitude to continue but I lost speed uphill. I made a circle forward to gain speed and then I saw 2 Fw shoot a Spit. The Spit was won (F/Sgt Robert Dunlop Davidson, "Lignou" Couterne) and the Fw 190, which was in front turned to the front and started diving sneaking slightly. I took gradually the speed and I shot for a second or two on the Fw 190 to about 400 yards. Then he recovered while continuing to descend. I still pulled about 250/300 yards. There was a small explosion just outside the cockpit and he crashed on a live house exploded. I took a picture of the plane crash enemy. Uffz Hans Jäger (KIA). Madré "Le Chauchis". I declare that I destroyed one Fw 190. Flight Lieutenant William Richard Tew. 10 miles east of Domfront.

Win report of Pilot Officer William Thomas Klersy. I was flying as "Yellow 1 in 401 Sqn during an" armed reconnaissance "at 7000 feet when aircraft were reported attacking the blue section. I veered was right and they immediately climbed online at nearly 110 mph. I fired at 150 yards. I've seen impacts on the engine and the passenger compartment and the nearest set of a sudden spin and crashed. I shot another Fw 190 and saw the impact, he plunged toward the ground makes a sharp turn and crashed. Both victories were confirmed by Yellow 4.
