Circus 217, September 7th 1942
On this day 302Sq claimed one a/c destroyed. It must have been around 11.40h off the Dutsch coast.
Does anyone know who the 302Sq pilot was and did he give a more precise location? Thanks in advance, Dennis |

Re: Circus 217, September 7th 1942
Hello Jerry and Artur,
Thank you for your fast reply's. I'm looking into the loss of Lt Karl Endrizzi, 4/.JG.1. He was lost in combat with bombers and fighters. Sources speak of Northwest of Leiden and 15 km west of zandvoort, both locations are a long way from Dover. Perhaps he was shot down by bombers of the 97th and 301st bombing groups. They were attacking Rotterdam that day. 133, 308 and 402 sqadron all claimed one damaged. 10./JG.1 also lost a fw190 near Nieuwkoop. It's not getting clearer ![]() Dennis |

Re: Circus 217, September 7th 1942
The Poles from Northolt Wing (302., 306., 308. Sqn) almost certainly fought with III./JG 26 over Channel. They lost one Spitfire (P/O Tadeusz Zdzitowiecki bailed out and was rescued by ASR) and one damaged (Sgt Ignacy Czajka wounded, belly landing in England) – both from 302. Sqn. P/O Zdzitowiecki was almost certainly shot down by Uffz. Alfred Niese from 9./JG 26. It isn’t clear whether Poles also fought with JG 1 or not.
There were also claims from 133. Sqn (0-1-0) and 402. Sqn (0-0-1). I found information that Lt. Karl Endrizzi from 4./JG 1 was shot down during the attack on American bombers’ formation by gunners from B-17’s. Is it true – I don’t know. |

Re: Circus 217, September 7th 1942
Hello all,
On 7 Sep 42 7 Fw 190 of II./JG 1 lead by Oblt Olejnik took off to intercept B-17's and escorting Spitfires over Holland. Fw Kaiser's Fw 190 was hit and made a crashlanding at Valkenburg A/F. Lt Endrizzi (4./JG 1) did not return - probably shot down during the first attack - was last seen at 6000 metres going down steeply through the clouds; sothat no observations could be made. Searches were in vain. Place last seen: about 30 km NW Leiden over the Northsea. The USA bombers were forced to drop their bombs in "Notwurf". One of the B-17's was hit in the engine and on fire. During the second attack no claims were made. 402 Sqdn (Sgt Cameron) claimed 1 Fw 190 damaged at 1025 hours near coast 10 miles West of Rotterdam - 133 Sqdn (P/O W H Baker) claimed 1 Fw 190 probably destoyed at 1030 hours out of sea West of Rotterdam. Baker observed that his Fw 190 "in a straight dive to 18000 feet during which time E/A took no evasive action. (..) He then went into the clouds in a vertical dive still pouring black smoke." Looks like that Baker claimed Endrizzi -- his observations corresponde with the last sights of the II./JG 1 pilots. Is there any more info on Endrizzi? Best wishes, Rob |

Re: Circus 217, September 7th 1942
Hoi Rob,
Thank you for your extensive answer. I do not have much more on Endrizzi. He washed up between Noordwijk and Katwijk on September 18th 1942 and was initially buried at Katwijk. He does not appear to have wrecked any other plane, nor does he appear in M. Holms claim list. He seems to be a very anonymous Luftwaffe flyer West of Rotterdam makes more sense than Northwest of Leiden. Bodies usually floated north before they reached the beach. Dennis |
