201 sqn loss
Am researching the loss of a 201 Squadron Sunderland. The aircraft, W3988, crashed near DOONBEG, Co. Clare, Ireland on 3rd December 1941; Does anyone have information regarding the circumstances of this loss?

Re: 201 sqn loss
Fana,
From RAF Coastal Command Losses, Vol 1. Lost the radio aids on a patrol then 18:30 hrs after two landing attempts crashed at Doonbeg, near Carrowmore Point, County Clare, Eire. The crew all left the aircraft safely but were unable to keep the two dinghies together and row the 2 to 3 miles to the shore. F/L Fleming and Sgt Masterson drifted ashore unconscious supported by their Mae Wests. Sgt Epps, LAC Lea and Sgt Fox rest in Milltown Malbay Church of Ireland Churchyard while LAC Doncaster and AC1 Bennett are buried in Killard Church of Ireland Churchyard, both in County Clare, Eire. P/O Emmett, a New Zealander, and the rest of the crew are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Regards Ross |
