Troops for defense aerodrome?
In armies of all countries were available special troops for defense aerodrome. In their structure there was an antiaircraft artillery, infantry, tanks and armoured cars. I know, that were available such troops and in German army. But I do not know their number, structure, arms, OOB and ToE, etc. I know, that in the summer of 1941 in France, Belgium and Holland was involved in protection of aerodromes of 100 trophy French tanks FT17.
Whether there is at somebody an information on this theme. Best regards Cyril |

Re: Troops for defense aerodrome?
Hello to you,
I have a small grass type airfield of the Luftwaffe nearby my hometown. The Guards on the outer fence were such called Landesschützenregimenter - these guys were patroulling arround the airfield. When in use by fighters, the airfield was protected by two types of AA troops. 1 - Regular troops from Flakdivision with soldiers 2 - such called Heimatschutzbatterien where 16 year old school boys were aiming the guns In eraly March 1945, the US troops did crossed the Rhine River at Remagen and started the Ruhr Pocket. Arround that time, the field received Bazookas Panzerfaust 100 + Panzerfaust 60 to defend the field. Additional to the just used troops, they brought regular Army troops to here (just a handfull of soldiers) which were ordered to defend the airfield with the Volkssturm. I understandm, that this is the situation on an small airfield in the Third Reich - I did not know how this was handeled outside Germany in occupied terretory. Hope this helps a little bit. |
