Erg/JG2 operations on 17th July 1941

I understand that Ltn. Hans Schneider of Erg/JG2 claimed a Blenheim at 15.10 on 17th July 1941 which may be Blenheim P4832 of the Special Duty Flight. But can anyone say where Erg / JG2 were based & operating on that afternoon?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

this Blenheim was claimed at 15.10 over Cherbourg. The 1.Erg/JG2 was based from 21.06.42 till ?.11.41 in Theville and took part in combat missions against british "Non-Stop Offensive" claiming 13 british planes between 10.07.41 and 12.10.41.

Regards

Robert

Re: Erg/JG2 operations on 17th July 1941

The fact that Blenheim P4832 ditched about 15 miles north of Cherbourg with one engine on fire at about 15.15 hours does suggest to me that it was shot down by Schneider of 1.Erg/JG2.

Also it seems to be the only RAF Blenheim lost that day as I can't find any Blenheim losses from Fighter, Bomber or Coastal Command for 17th July 1941 or any similar looking types like a Beaufort or Beaufighter in the Cherbourg area.

One point is over the time - was 15.15 hours in the L/Waffe report the same as UK time?

Re: Erg/JG2 operations on 17th July 1941

Robert,

Thanks for all your help. It really is greatly appreciated. The son of the pilot of Blenheim P4832 will be amazed. According to the thread you gave the link for, the time was the same in Occupied NW Europe as in England - and presumably France, so the 1.Erg/ JG2 victory claim for the Blenheim at 15.15 hrs was the very time in the UK that contact was lost with P4832 - and in the same area as the claim - and the only Blenheim lost that day on ops in NW Europe!

This Forum never ceases to amaze me!

Now all I would like to do is find a photo of Ltn Hans Schneiders Bf 109!

Would 1.Erg/ JG2 have been equipped with the Bf 109F-2 or still had E's for training?

Robert,

Are the combat reports for 1.Erg./JG2 for this date available? If so where are they held?
