He 177 on a wing and a prayer
On p163 of Dr Alfred Price's Blitz on Britain (Ian Allan, 1976) is a Bundesarchiv photo showing a crew from I/KG.100 inspecting a large hole in the starboard wing of their He 177, where a fuel tank has been completely blown out of their a/c.
The fuselage code-letter visible is 'L'. Can anyone identify the crew or provide any other details on this incident ? Brian Bines informs me the only contender for a 'damaged' He 177 during Steinbock (the 1944 attacks on Gt Britain) appears to be Werk-Nr.535794, which made an emergency landing on return from ops to London on 24-25 Feb 1944. If there were no crew casualties, I appreciate that it may be difficult to find details, but I'd be grateful for any input your genned-up readers may have on this. TIA BC |
