Whirlwind P7062/HE-L

As I do not have the books to hand, can anyone tell me the eventual fate of this aircraft?

Re: Whirlwind P7062/HE-L

Thanks for this. I have an original copy of Charles Brown's photo of this ac in flight so it is nice to have a fate. Unfortunately although I have a mention of Hicks, I do not have a photo of him

Re: Whirlwind P7062/HE-L

Paul: If your list is to hand, what about P6971 and P6981 both of which I have photos? I also have a photo of a burnt out Whirlwind at dispersal (no details), a series showing P6976 after its crash-landing near Bridgewater 15 Feb 41 (HE-X) and an upside down P7112 on 1 Apr 42

See below, thanks for the info, I think I have an identity for your burnt-out Whirlwind as P7038, also your info has included a
new code P6976 for me and confirmed a previously disputed date for P7112

“I have a series of photos showing P6976 after its crash-landing near Bridgewater 15 Feb 41 (HE-X)”

P7112

263 Sqn
Westland
263 Sqn To 39 MU 26.9.41. To 263 Squadron 15.10.41. To works for repair 25.11.41. Returned to 263 Squadron 21.12.41. Cat AC ROS 12.2.42 (probably damaged during operations during Channel Dash)

Why the job is not going so well is that the Squadron has had two crashes on the aerodrome in two days and they reflect on the Squadron Leader. Nothing had, but the aircraft have been damaged beyond repair! I don’t know what one does about it either. I feel a spot blue about leaving 137 Squadron just before their unfortunate encounter with the Hun (Channel Dash).”
I seem to recall that P7112 had some sort of incident requiring contractors repair at around this time.
Flypast Forum 17th March 2006

A) Swung on landing at Fairwood Common, bounced and turned over 1.4.42. Cat E damage; Pilot escaped.
Or below (date unlikely)
B) Blown over by gust on landing and wing hit ground; over- turned, Fairwood Common, 14.3.42 (date unlikely)
Chris Goss via TOCH on 30.01.07
“I have an upside down P7112 on 1.4.42”
Note: I now I believe the top reference (A) is the 100% correct one
