Punishment of LW Pilots Failing to Carry Out Missions?

 Gentleman:
Was there a typical approach taken by the LW to punishing pilots who failed to press home missions due to what might be termed a failure of nerve?

Don Calwell in JG 26 War Dairy Vol Two states that the third Gruppe of JG 26 failed to enter the combat zone on its first mission on 18 December, this fact being noted by tracking the location of a FuG 16ZY equipped aircraft. The formation leader was offered the choice by JG 26 commander Pips Priller of immediately flying a second successful mission, or facing trial for cowardice in the face of the enemy, the penalty for which was a firing squad. Caldwell states that, although a second mission was flown, it did not contact the enemy and the formation leader committed suicide after landing.

I imagine that, from time to time, all air forces in WW2 had to face the impossible challenges caused by the clash between maintaining military discipline in a life or death struggle and fallible human nature.

 Thanks

 Don
