Exactly that´s the meaning, oldtimer.
A typical ground accident with aircraft : Killed by a blow from propeller

Re: Translation help

Thanks again guys. This explanation would also explain the lack of an aircraft with the loss. I'm used to seeing 'propellorschlag' as the explanation for these types of losses, so this one kinda threw me.

Re: Translation help

Just for a better understanding-
In German both expressions mean nearly the same incident
"vom Kraftfahrzeug erfasst" - hit (or seized) by a car
"vom Flugzeug erfasst" - hit (or seized) by a plane
in both cases a standing/walking person is injured by a moving machine.
"Propellerschlag" may be only one lethal cause. When taxying at high speed, a person being struck by the leading edge may suffer a deadly blow.

Roland

Re: Translation help

Gentlemen, please note the original loss description: "Beim Rollen vom Flugzeug erfasst". It means according to my understanding, that Schütz and Kratzel were in a taxying aircraft and not standing on ground when hit. Otherwise the sentence should be "Vom rollenden Flugzeug erfasst".

Re: Translation help

Matti,
grammatically you´re absolutely right.
A writer using a sophisticated German would have written such as you did.
But I think the common Luftwaffe clerk used this simple, though misinterpretative language.
Three persons are meant IMO - two sitting IN the plane (must be a 2-seater) and the other one lying underneath the plane - the victim.

Hope this helps

Regards

Roland

Re: Translation help

Hello Guys,

the NVM reports

"Uffz. Sch. befand sich auf dem Weg vom Start zur Halle um dort seinen Fallschirm abzugeben. Auf dem Weg dorthin wurde er von einem hinter ihm rollenden Flugzeug angerollt und durch Luftschraubenschlag tödlich verletzt."

Uffz Sch was on his way from the starting point to the hangar to deposit his parachute. He was touched by an aircraft taxiing behind him and was mortally wounded from being hit by the propellor.

So clearly a "Propellerschlag" and no significant damage to the aircraft.

HTH

Carl
