Not necessarily so, Evgeny, for letters painted on the uppersurfaces of the wing.

Re: Bf 110 photos

L1+JH photo, with that puzzling silhouette of a Bf 110 on the engine cowling of the nearest machine again...!

Re: Bf 110 photos

John,

thanks for pointing out this odd badge... Any idea if this was an individual plane badge or relevant for all LG 1 machines in this time frame?

Cheers

Marc,

That silhouette appears on several photos of early Bf 110s. Fernando and I have never been able to work out why it was applied to the engine cowling of some machines. It may have been some kind of in-flight distance indicator for formation flying. Other than that, I haven't a clue.

John,

This is quite a fascinating hypothesis! Thanks for your insight.

Dunno if you noticed, but the silouhette is visible also on one LG 1 plane photo in one of Meyer/Stipdonk books...

From photos it looks like the same size silhouette is on both sides of the cowling. The pilot's side silhouette would be fine, a good size for aiding formation flying, but why have it on the other, outer side? It doesn't make sense to have it also on the opposite side for formation flying because the pilot couldn't see it, so I think the silhouette must have another, as yet, unknown purpose
