Closest loss on 21 Sep 1943 in the area would be B-26B 41-17861 of 320th BG/444th BS that ditched at te mouth of the river Sele after flak hit in right engine. Six of crew had parachuted to safety, while pilot and co-pilot got out by dinghy (this B-26 had an eight-men crew, with extra observer and navigator).

I realize this is not a fighter, but it may be a start after all.

Leendert

Thanks to everyone that help me. The date appear to be sure because a witness that lived that days write in his diary: 'Tuesday 21 sept. 1943 a USA airplane was shot from german fighters. Pilot bailed out and aircraft crashed on earth'. The witnessing appears to be sure. Do you have some ideas??? The place on ground was 50 miles south of Salerno or 10 miles south\east of Agropoli.

Even if the date is sure, the nationality of the shot down aircraft is not. Civilian witnesses were not very good to identify aircraft in the air, and military ones were not better.... So you can search losses of all Allied airforces.

Re: USA Fighters crashed in Salerno 21 sept 1943?

Spitfire EF550 (RAF) reportedly crashed 55 m. S. of Salerno, but then on 23-9-43.

On 21 Sep 43 2nd Lt William F. Imwall of 31st FG/309th FS was killed. This FG was in the process of transferring from Sicily to Montecorvino.
However, I don't know the circumstances of his death.

Leendert

Re: USA Fighters crashed in Salerno 21 sept 1943?

Here is a report of crash site we investigate.

We know from book and witnessing that a USA aircraft crashed on ground in sept 1943 (some say 9 sept, some say 21 sept) around 50 km south of Salerno. Perhaps aircraft had double fuselage. Shot down from german fighters. Pilot bailed out before crash.

Every informations you can give to identify it will be very appreciate.

The place.

Neither are there any known claims by German fighters on that date in the Med. Date must be incorrect or records from both sides are missing or wrong. Neither are there any German claims for the 20th or the 22nd.

Hello,

It smells like a P-38, especially the hemispheric part with 14 ST, 247805, (704), 246079. Be cautious even with firsthand notes.

Best regards
