What is with #11? It has the small intake just behind the prop, but unlike a G, it is not on the cowling cover. In fact, it looks as if it was a field modification. An F with a field intake? And the camouflage is most interesting, broad segments of dark and light.

If I am not mistaken, the series is of Dobrich with JG 5. Likely an F-4/trop.

Not a production F-4 Trop as these had the G oil cooler. Likely a local mod. for whatever reason. It is an F-4 as indicated by the round wheel well. Note, also, the armored glass on the windscreen, usually a field mod.

Re: Photos Me 109 - 05/07 on eBay

Kjetil Aakra in his article on the colors of II./JG 5 pointed out that many of these aircraft were from block 10001-10290, the last of the Bf 109 F-4 aircraft before production of the G-series. The balance were believed to be from repair centers. Perhaps an explanation for the scoops to be found in one of these places? Or part of the modification from desert standard?

Hi.

We have seen these on several aircraft of II./JG 5, most of them in the said WNr range.

A bit flatter than the production G-series scoops we believe they were introduced as a modification for the same reason as on the G, possibly at Pori, and thus a JG 5 specific modification.

They could of course turn up in other units later, by transfer of aircraft from JG 5 to for example training units.

Regards,
Andreas B

Wrong Don,
But not only you, I've been too fast too.. . In fact it's WNr.10073, a Bf109F-4/Trop flown by "Rudi" Muller as "Gelbe 3".
Effectively the camouflage doesn't match at all with Dobrich "Gelbe 10" but yes with Muller's one.
No Cat and no number yes but the camouflage matches perfectly; note the overpainted "X" close the wing camera fairing and the dark panel around underwing cross too.
Last, Muller's Gelbe 3 wore a spiral on spinner but some pictures (most of them in fact) show this spinner markings.

Tschuss, Franck.
