There are a number of technical features which give good leads, the first is that you can see the remains of the frame of the nose section, and the details one can see there match the Z style nose, second difference is the main upper structure of the aft section of the cockpit, with the rear gunner position. If you compare details between the Z and the P/M (also E/F) you can easily detect the difference. In this photo the whole roof and the section holding the machine gun is detachable and can be jetisoned - as has been done here. On the P/M it was not detachable, but part of the airframe structure. The cockpit itself is slightly larger on the Z compared to P/M too.
There were only 15 Do 17 U built so the likelyhood that it is one of them is extremely small, especially since most of them, if not all, had been relegated to non-combat duties by that time the photo was taken. So with a 99,9% chance you can say that it is a Do 17 Z version of some sort. |
