James, good morning.
I remember reading a book (either Tigers in the Mud or Michael Wittmann and the Tiger Commanders of the 1 LAAH) that an IL-2 Sturmovik was shot down by a Tiger gunner, who had a "lucky shot". I posted a thread down here on Toch some time ago, but got no positive answer from the Russian Experts to ID this IL-2. I believe a lot of L-4 Grasshoper were shot down either by their own Artillery Fire or by enemy fire.... Do you know in which unit this Spitfire pilot you do mention flew? I am interested because a Brazilian born pilot was shot down on D-Day on a mysterious and still unknown way. I suspect he was either hit by "friendly Fire" or by the German Flak...
