Leendert will become famous soon enough
Re: US Airmen where buried ?

Alex, surf to catalog.archives.gov and use Advanced Search. Enter Bedford's ASN in Keywords. Scroll down to Record Group Number and enter 92. If done correctly you'll find Bedfords's Internment card on page #732. Heading of that card says he was buried on 27 Feb 1948 at the Golden Gate Cemetery, grave D948. Leendert

Re: US Airmen where buried ?

[OK Leendert,
Got it.
Strange though they buried him at the Golden Gate ! But had only just sent the mail to his NOK.
So I wonder if this was just a convenient way of discarding those many who were returned to the USA. Perhaps his NOK had him disinterned and buried somewhere neared home at a later date ?

Re: US Airmen where buried ?

Here is his grave in the Golden Gate Cemetary.

The name on the gravestone is William V Bedord..

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...lliam-v-bedord

His middle name was Vance. He was born in Canada. His draft registration from 1940 can be found once you have the name correct.

Local newspaper story when he died in 1942:

Re: US Airmen where buried ?

Well done Rolland,
Grateful thanks for your help.
So sad to see that they couldn't even get his name right on the headstone.
Still we now know for certain where he rests.
Came up right away on findagrave when using the Bedord name .
SO, Concerned about which was his correct name, Bedford or Bedord ???
Again, many thanks
Alex

Re: US Airmen where buried ?

His correct name is Bedord. The gravestone has it correct. That is also how his draft registration has his name and signature. His mother is listed as next of kin. He is also listed as Bedord on the WWII casualty list for Oregon. The BAA link posted earlier has his name incorrect.

Re: US Airmen where buried ?

Thanks for the update, but his enlistment details, the aircraft passenger list, and the newspaper cuttings all have Bedford .
So as said am concerned that the name given to the Cemetery was misspelled.

Alex,

I looked him up under "Nicholas" after I got a null reply to "Nick"

Re: Bedord. That is the way it is spelled. His father is mentioned throughout the years in Oregon newspapers ending with his obit in 1943.

https://www.newspapers.com/article/h...ary/182030472/

His mother passed in 1958. If the name had been misspelled, someone in the family would have called the newspaper the first day and it would have been fixed for the remaining time the obit was up.
