Re: eBay: Allied intrest
This is B-17F 41-24445 "Southern Belle" also "Six Bits" 97BG; shot down probably by II./JG26 FW190, 6 Sept. 42 on VIIIBC Mission 10 to the Avions Potez factory at Meaulte (10 POW). Only short-range missions at this date. The first B-17s lost by Bomber Command, 1 from 97th, 1 from 92nd. A new "F", the 97th exchanged their B-17Es for the 92nd B-17Fs; 445 only arrived in August. No markings at this time and assigned to Twelfth AF in Nov.
The bomb is a 1000lb. M44 HE, a yellow ring at rear identified filling. She may have been "Six Bits" when assigned temporarily to 92BG. Update. From Don Caldwell's "JG26 Top guns of the Luftwaffe". 41-24445 shot down by Hptm. Meyer Stab./JG26; the 92BG B-17E 41-9026 "Baby Doll" by 4.Staffel and ditched in Channel.
