Re: Ed West Finding Ju 52 with BMW 801 motors?

It is notable that the engines had a forward collector pipe acting as the forard part of the NACA cowl. This was a Bristol practice, probably patented, so rules out most of the engines mentioned so far.

I suspect the Alfa Romeo engines (as on the S.79) are the most likely.

Gentlemen!

you may be pleased to hear that the next issue of German "JET&PROP" magazine will carry a full article about the use of the JU-52 as an engine testbed

Re: Ed West Finding Ju 52 with BMW 801 motors?

Not Jet & Prop, but FLUGZEUG CLASSIC. It is a two-part article which deals with the Ju 52 as a flying testbed for Jumo engines (Jumo 205, 207, 211, 213 and 222).

Re: Ed West Finding Ju 52 with BMW 801 motors?

Seplanes has asked me for verification on the identity of this Ju 52/3m and here it is:

This is indeed the ex-Italian Ju 52/3m D-ASPI W.Nr. 6710 with Alfa-Romeo 126 RC34 engines used by Lufthansa until April 1945, with a last scheduled flight from Milan to Munich on 21 April 1945. It was ferried by Flugkapitän Christof Drexel fom Munich-Riem to DLH's last retreat and "Head Office South" at Prien am Chiemsee on 29 April 1945. When taxying and turning at its parking position the plane got stuck in the muddy ground with the right undcarriage being damaged as can be seen on the post-war photograph taken at Prien.

It can be confirmed that this plane never served as an engine test-bed but as a workhose well-suited with that engines for scheduled services across the Alps.
