Question Question about Cannons.

This is my first post here, please forgive me if I am posting a question already asked.

What is the cause of the little smoke trails that lagged behind the shells that you see in all the old Luftwaffe gun camera footage? They are especially prevalent in the scenes where Fw-190's attack bombers. Are these contrails from the high altitued, or are they part of a fuseing mechanism? A friend asked me, and I wasn't sure what the answer was.

Much thanks in advance.

Re: Question about Cannons.

Tracers, probably. Day tracers often relied on smoke as light was harder to see.
