J.E. Johnson claims
I have heard that Johnson did a study of Priller's claims because he did not believe them, but, found that most were verifiable. To put the shoe on the other foot, has there ever been a study of Johnson's claims to identify unit and pilot?

Re: J.E. Johnson claims
Hi,
Dilip Sarkar's 2 volumes on Johnson "Spitfire Top Gun - 1 & 2" give some tie-ins on his claims but only from his arrival at Kenley as Wing Leader. Cheers Bruce Lander |

Re: J.E. Johnson claims
Hi,
I have spent a couple of hours perusing Johnny Johnson's claims using "ACES HIGH", "SPITFIRE TOP GUN"," FIGHTER COMMAND WAR DIARIES", "2nd TAF" & "WING LEADER" as sources and note the following:- His first claim the Do.17 shared damaged with "Cocky" Dundas on 15 Jan 1941 did in fact crash land at Antwerp 20% damaged it was 1174 of II/KG3 His 1st claim destroyed which is described in detail in "Wing Leader" a Bf.109E marked <+4 with a pilot who baled out near Gravelines is very hard to identify - Any ideas anyone ? The next 5 + 1 shared were all 109's and are all in that period of high overclaiming by Fighter command and are almost impossible to verify The next claims are a Fw190 and a shared Bf109F on 19 August 1942 over Dieppe are difficult to identify although they were witnessed by other pilots - Who was the guy in the 190 with Italian markings!! that Johnson battled with wihout result ? Of the remainder claimed as Wing Leader 1943-44 a total of 15 are identified against Luftwaffe losses ( I will post them later ) Cheers Bruce Lander |
