Info on Photo
Can anyone help me with info on this photo.
What I could read on the back is: Amerikanischer Flugzeug Holland Nov 1944, I think. Ray |

Re: Info on Photo
Probably (99%) P-47D. 78 FG, 83 FS, 42-76587, belly landed 5 miles southwest of Goch September 18,1944, Lt. John Loegering POW.
From Gary Frys' excellent book on the 78th FG, Eagles of Duxford: The 78th Fighter Group in WWII. (Phalanx-1991) |

Re: Info on Photo
The first pic you posted was as identified by Kaki ~ September-November crash site for a 78th FG P-47D. I'm away from my references so can't comment on the pilot of the crashed Jug.
The second pic is a very narrow time interval photo and drawing of the same P-47D between June 6 and approximately July 7-10, 1944. The D-Day invasion stripes were painted completely around the fuselage on the eve of D-Day and the 8th AF issued an order on July 7 to remove the top half of the fuselage stripes and the top of the wing invasion stripes. All invasion stripes were removed in the late October to mid November 1944 timeframe. |

Re: Info on Photo
Ok that sounds logic.
Only thing bothering me then is that Gogh is Germany and not Holland. Could it be that it fell just on the dutch side of the border a few miles away from Gogh? Ray |

Re: Info on Photo
Hi Ray.
I would think that the information for the loss report has been taken from other pilots of that missions reports and that Gogh has been taken as the nearest town. I don't know the exact location of the belly landing but the "5 miles SW of Gogh" given in the incident report ( # 5553) would , according to Google Maps, put the crash site just over the Dutch border. MACR for this incident is # 9002 Hope this helps, Nige |
