Luftwaffe Airman kill fellow POW

I came accross a Canadian site which shows POW Uffz.Dr. Karl Lehmann 1-4-06 to 11-9-44 of the Africa Korps was killed by fellow prisoners. Four men were later hanged on the 18-12-1946 for his murder, the site shows the following I have put what I believe is the when they were shot down/captured :-

Fw. Willi Muller b.18-2-1914 flew 87 missions before being shot down by a Spitfire near Glasgow = Bs Fw Willi Muller of 2/KFG106 shot down by a Defiant 6/7-5-1944

Fw Heinrich Busch b. 18-12-14 flew 26 missions before his aircraft hit a baloon over Norfolk = Ff Fw Heinrich Busch of 4/KG53 aircraft hit by PAC rocket over Watton 17/18-2-1941

Ofw Bruno Perzonowsky b 31-12-1911 flew 60 missions, shot down over Wales 13/14.4.41 = B Ofw. Bruno Perzonowsky He111 H5 of 3/KG28 crashed Snowdonia 13/14-4-1941.

The fourth man hanged being an Uffz Walter Wolf Africa Korps.
Apparantly Karl Lehmann a professor of langauges had expressed anti-nazi views.
To my mind a rather sad story with the five deaths, of men who had already been fortunate to avoid death,

Re: Luftwaffe Airman kill fellow POW

Hi Brian,

I found this link too while searching for information on a memorial card I obtained for a Feldwebel Willi Muller too. The man we both found has a different birth date and my man was killed on the 12th March 1944.

Lots of people have looked at my link but no luck yet about his history. He was a German Cross in Gold holder - from a bomber squadron.

Like you - what a waste of life.

Rick

Hi Rick,

Like you I came on the site looking for your deathcard man, I had tried the few bomber books I had with no luck. I also tried looking up DKiG holders but did not have much luck with Willi Muller.
Hope someone finds something for you,

Regards

I have somewhere a book about German POWs in Canada-the story of what happened in respect of the murder of Lehmann is well documented

There were also a few cases in US POW camps during WW II where POWs murdered other POWs. The killers were tried and convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The executions were carried out after VE day so the Germans didn't retaliate against Allied POWs.

Re: Luftwaffe Airman kill fellow POW

Just came across this interesting thread - I think this link shows the Willi Muller concerned but it was 1941 when he was shot down not 1944

Re: Luftwaffe Airman kill fellow POW

Interesting thread indeed & something about which I was unaware. The date in 1941 fits much better with Willi Muller's crash being as a result of a Defiant shoot down, as it is most unlikely that any Defiants were operational as nightfighters in 1944.
Steve.

This is the correct Müller (based on his birthday):
