British nightfighters in 1940/41?
When it comes to Battle of Britian, most of its history writing is devoted to the daybombings. However, I have read that Germans bombings were actually heavier during late 1940 and early 1941 when they switched to nightbombing.
Spitfire was found unsuitable as nightfighters, and some "second-rate" planes like Defiant were found better for nightfighting. Is there any stats how successful British nightfighters were during 1940/1941 and how different Hurricane, Defiant, Blenheim and Beaufighter units fared? As German nightfighters sometimes followed British nightbombers over their airports to shoot them down during landing, was there any attempt to put up a British nightfighter cover over British bases against those attacks? |
