or maybe not from KG51, has in the album there is a mix of KG51 nd recce unit ..

That is a P model and it may be as late as '42.

It is my understanding that Kampfflieger units had recce aircraft for the purpose of determining bombing effectiveness. The was transferred to a Aufklärer units.

Hi, folks...

For what it's worth, I have to say I think this is a Dornier Do17M. The emblem is that of III.Gruppe, KG51, and therefore in theory, the machine would have been coded 9K+?R, S, or T, depending on which particular Staffel within III.Gruppe it was attached to (7, 8 or 9 respectively). Although the bombsight fairing is missing, the lower portion of the sight does seem to protrude from the lower fuselage in the correct area where the fairing would have been situated.

The Do17P was the reconnaisance counterpart with cameras installed in the bomb bay area. Nothing would suprise me, but I personally have no knowledge of bomber units flying reconnaissance versions, or reconnaissance machines being allocated bomber insignia, as here. I am aware, however, of Do17Ms being used by at least one Stukageschwader, one example coded A5+BA of Stab./St.G.1, for the purpose of co-ordinating massed formations over the target area.

You're right. These Do 17s have Bramo engines, while the P version had BMW engines.

It seems that some different pictures are discussed, in the pictures offered by the seller, there are M nd P models, armament seems very formidable for obviously pre-war planes, markings 9K+EHX HRX, some explanation in Bert Hartmann's site, maybe markings of ergänz. Gruppe..

I think everybody is talking about pictures from the link you've posted, I couldn't locate any Do 17 P among them, to me these are all M-models (Bramo 323) with typical M-fuselages, of course bombsight covers are missing as there are cameras mounted instead, but this alone does not make them Do 17 P

I know that BMW took over Bramo (Brandenburgische Motorenwerke) - but the Bramo 323 (of the Do 17M) was stil not the same engine as the BMW 132 (of the Do 17P). The version of the BMW 132 used on the Do 17P had two small round air intakes inside the cowl (on both sides of the top cylinder). So it's not really difficult to tell a Do 17M from a Do 17P in a frontal view.
